Brabantia Bins - why are they so expensive and are they worth it?

Bought a new kitchen bin the other day. Couldn't really justify an expensive one and wondered why they are so expensive but now the one we bought has broken (it was a push lid one). So wondered whether we should have spent more and bought a Brabantia? But I resent having to spend that amount of money on something you put the rubbish in. Are they really worth it or are you just paying for a 'designer name' (for a bin?!)

Their customer service is wonderful - I broke the lid and a new one arrived 2 days after I spoke to them.

emsyj · 09/10/2010 10:55

I am dim, and impatient! So I am better off with my cheap-ass plastic bin and giant no-instructions-needed bin bags.

nancydrewrocked · 09/10/2010 11:00

Worth it in my opinion - they are solid and the mechanisim on my touch bin lin doesn't rust despite being run through the dishwasher frequently.

I always use ordinary bin sacks - we couldn't buy Brabantia liners overseas and so got used to generic ones which seem to work just as well.

I've just bought a 30L one at Tesco for £40 which I thought was pretty good value.

meanymum · 17/10/2010 16:20

Thanks for opinions. It seems (generally) that people think they're better value and worth it. Starlings thanks for the Tesco link. That looks a good offer but they're currently out of stock. Hopefully, they'll be back in stock soon.

I love my SimpleHuman bin. It's whisper close.
and takes standard pedal bin liners

When the lid of our Branbantia bin broke, I emailed them to find out how much a replacement would cost. They sent us one free - sadly it didn't fit but they sent us the correct one second time, still without any charge.

tennisgirl · 17/10/2010 17:13

I've had one of these for years - when the lid breaks I just phone up and within two days I have a new lid - free. That is why they cost a bit more - plus you can get loads in it. However I would say that these touch bin lids are no good if you have cats or dogs, they soon fathom out how to open them up and help themselves. I now have to tuck my bin under the edge if the kitchen table when I go out. I did try putting a pile of magazines on top but they just got knocked off.

Northwestisbest · 12/03/2011 09:11

The best Bin Liners I have found are Smartt, they fit my 50L bin perfectly and are very strong, I buy them from Morrisons

Northwestisbest · 12/03/2011 09:15

I have found best bags for my 50L Brabantia Bin are from Morrisons sell Smartt 30L and 50L they are very strong and fit my bin perfectly.
We try to avoid bags that have chalk added to them as we think they split

Northwestisbest · 12/03/2011 09:18

Tesco's Bin Bags are very strong, we have bought bags from Sainsbury's with chalk added and they split and are not as strong as Tesco's

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/03/2011 09:29

My SIL has given up on hers because the lid kept braking. I've got a pedal bin from Asda that works fine and doesn't break every time you open the lid.

Part of the high cost will be all the magazine adverts they place. They aren't cheap to place.

I used a simplehuman bin on holiday that seemed a lot more solid IYSWIM.

mellie64 · 12/03/2011 10:36

i have one and use cheap bin liners in them and they are fine, our lid broke after 10 years and i called them about buying a replacement and they sent me one for free. they are alot of money but worth it of you can get one in the sale.

Driftwood999 · 12/03/2011 17:54

Brabantia are value for money imx, more robust, better fittings and coatings that do not rust as readily as cheaper brands. You don't need to buy the expensive liners though.

Panzee · 12/03/2011 17:57

tennisgirl why does the lid keep breaking? Is it over-eager pets or a crappy lid?

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 12/03/2011 23:23

We've had the 20L slimline pedal one for 10 years, it is as good as new, love it.

freshmint · 12/03/2011 23:26

another one who was sent a free lid after 10 years of trouble free use

mine is 12 now and looks just the same as it always did

can't fault it

RiceTart · 14/03/2011 16:04

I came on this thread to complain about my lid breaking - but instead you helpful ladies encouraged me to fill in a quick form on the Brabantia Website and they are now sending me a new lid for free!! It's been bugging me for over a year and I never even considered that they would replace it - I lost the receipt years ago. Grin Many thanks!!!!

Figgyrolls · 14/03/2011 16:12

I love our 50l one, its baby blue and is pretty brilliant. It is easy to clean too. The bags for brabantia are very solid, but expensive, however there are some others out there that work just as well! I have had mine for about 7 years and it is well abused and still looks fab. The only thing that would make me change it is the fact that since we moved house it doesn't really fit anywhere - in our old house our kitchen was designed around it with it in mind Grin.

ajandjjmum · 14/03/2011 16:17

We had the lid exchange too! 50L and still going strong after 8 years.

positivesteps · 17/03/2011 01:00

Don't get the tall thin one they are rubbish and you have to empty them every 2 minutes. Get the wider one that's the best. They are greart had mine years .

Figgyrolls · 17/03/2011 09:26

Second that - the 50l is fab and does a weeks worth of rubbish for family of 4 inc nappies etc, although now we recycle food so a lot less going in but even so in a week we used to get through 1.5 bins (oh and cat and dog too!)

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 17/03/2011 10:40

Conversely I like my tall thin one because I like to change the bag at least every other day.

Figgyrolls · 17/03/2011 12:11

Whoknows, I did too until we had a new waste policy from the council so now we have a bin for everything so there is less rotting stuff in the bin, also luckily for us it isn't in the main part of the kitchen as we have a little bit off the kitchen where it currently lives Grin
