washing newborn poo out of clothes

my ds is 6 days old and has had a couple of leaky nappies. Is it ok to put pooey clothes in the washing machine with the rest of your washing (using non-bio)? Obviously getting rid of any solid bits first, but it's very runny. tia

I wouldn't (but I am very fussy!). But can't help thinking its like doing your wash in a tiny bit of sewage.

Soak first in napisan or bio powder.

I did. It is a washing machine afterall.

If you're worried about it could you put the soiled things on a rinse cycle first, then add in the rest of your wash?

i tend to rinse through first to get rid of as much as possible and then if they're really awfully pooey i'd probably wash without anything else in the machine.

nannyl · 07/09/2010 20:51

it will be fine

think about washable nappies which come out of the machine clean

marzipananimal · 07/09/2010 21:25

thank you, think i'll soak if they're really pooey but otherwise not worry

Will be fine in machine, i wash upto 15 nappies at a time in there (probs about 9 poo ones as shes an olympic pooer haha) and they come out fresh lol, i would soak or wash in bio powder first to lift the stain as vests can go out of shape if washed too hot.

Yes, it's fine.

As another tip, once they are washed sunlight will easily bleach out any poo stains.

I'd really recommend Napisan in with your regular non-bio powder. That worked well for us, but we need to put the wash through an extra-rinse to get the napisan out properly as DS came out in a rash otherwise.

The Napisan will kill any germs, so you don't need to worry about them getting on to other items in the wash. At least, that's what it says on the packet, so it must be true Grin.

Wouldn't bother me at all.
