Do I have to tell my current energy supplier than I am changing over?

I think I can get a better deal with a different gas / electric supplier and they deal with all the change-over stuff.

Do I still need to tell my current energy supplier or does the new one do it all?

I will need to change the direct debit too won't I?

Any advice / warnings would be useful. TIA.

You ring the new supplier you want to go with and tell them the details. The supplier you want to go with then contacts your current supplier.

In our case our existing supplier then rang us to check we really did want to transfer. There is a lot of scammers about who transfer people without their knowledge.

Our existing supplier just asked us if we had checked their best deals - which we had - and that we were aware r acocunt wa sbeing transferred to teh new suplier. That was it.

Yes you do need to cancel the old direct deit but wait until your final bill with your old supplier has been paid and the account closed. Usually you have to supply a final meter reading or they come out and do one.

yes as BeenBeta says, I would just add you probably won't have any problems as long as there is no outstanding debt on your account.
