Bedroom flooring/carpet for childrens bedroom

We need to replace the existing carpets in our little girls' bedrooms (they are really on their last legs, and horrible colours-were here when we moved in a couple of years ago). Anyway I am a bit at a loss. DD1 is 3 and DD2 a baby. Is it better to get carpet or wood/laminate floor? And if carpet, which seems to be uber-complicated, what kind would be best?
Thank you for your advice.

I put wooden flooring into ds' room - it is easy to keep clean and practical. It also won't restrict in terms of colour if we change the decor of the room in a few years.

That is what we are thinking too... Can I ask - does it feel cold underfoot? I guess a rug would sort that...

We got a cream -twist carpet. Sort of creamy with speckly bits in it. Very good for not showing stains.

How much time will they spend in there? Wooden floors would be noisy if there was lots of playing in there.

I have real wood floors all over my home and wish I had stuck with carpet.

I suppose it depends on the type of house you have and whether you have under floor heating, but apart from the summer months, wooden flooring is soooo cold. I have big rugs everywhere, which do look nice in contrast with the wood, but it is still cold.

In my lo's room we bought the biggest rug we could fit in, so it's not too bad, but next year I'm putting carpet down in the bedrooms and a runner on the stairs, as it is very noisy (again dependant on the type of house you have).

Thank you for your replies.

MrsFlux, cream twist sounds perfect. I was worried about cream as we had cream carpets through our old house and they really showed up dirt. But a speckled version makes sense.

Stilletoe, interesting to hear your experience. I get cold v easily. House isn't particularly cold (compact detached four-bedroomed house built in the 1990s; windows are small) but I get cold quickly. Have been thinking about the noise factor too - DD1 has a big wooden dolls house full of furniture that could make a lot of noise if she kept dropping it onto wooden floors...

Am leaning towards carpet.... though that in itself is a minefield...
