Yesterday, DH decided to take us all on a trip to Cambridge. It turns out his time away from us has led to complete amnesia about living with children, as he had imagined us all walking round the colleges, admiring the architecture, then eating a lovely picnic by the river. Instead, this happened...
First, we parked at the 'park and ride' carpark and queued for the bus. Just as the bus appeared in the distance, DS2 (4) clutched himself, shouted "I need the loo!" and disappeared into the ladies, with me in hot pursuit. Half an hour and five buses later, we re-emerged.
Arrived in Cambridge at last, bought ice creams for DC and walked round Trinity College, admiring architecture, as DH had imagined. However, by now DC were getting bored and hungry. Spent far too long persuading DH that they needed to eat, by which time DC were getting very whiny. Stocked them up with sausage rolls and drinks at a pasty cafe, then set off again.
Found the riverside, where DS2 stood in a cow pat. DS1 said he wanted to go home and play on the computer. DH decided to call it a day and we set off to look for the 'park and ride' bus stop. It took us an hour to find it, by which time both children were weeping. A beetle flew into my eye and DH had to fish it out, whilst DC wailed. When we finally boarded the bus, we discovered we were going in the wrong direction, so we had to go all the way round Cambridge twice before finally reaching our 'park and ride' car park. On the way, we passed a funfair and both children cried, "Why didn't you take us THERE?"
So today I have suggested we do something child-friendly for the morning. Big family party this afternoon, but hopefully DC will be tired and happy by then.
Lots of Flying going on in this house, but not by me
