....starting to smell.

I had this MAD idea....we have a downstairs bathroom... so i put them in the bath and used my feet (like old fashioned wine making!) to squish all the 'dirt etc' out....having last year only washed the seat covers...this time wanted a more thorough clean.

and was so pleased with myself...seeing all the dirty water.....

now i am seriously feeling sick as i am certain i have ruined the sofa.

i won't even be able to claim on our home insurance as a)this is not an accident.... and b)I bet the manufacturers don't recommend cleaning sofas using my method.

Ok try to keep calm-how many cushions have you washed? Is it just the seat pads or the backs too?
If it's just seat pads and they are ruined then you should be able to get foam cut to size at the market(or similar)once the cushion covers are back, on no one will know.

Tell us more about it-maybe someone else knows more. I really do feel for you; this sounds just like something I would do.

can you get them to a large capacity machine at a laundrette?
spin drying will help
what are they filled with, perhaps they can be tumbled?

schroeder · 13/07/2010 18:51

Mrs Forgetful, how did you get on?

LizHF · 15/07/2010 15:59

Hi Mr forgetful,

Sorry to hear about your recent sofa seat cushion, disaster. I can't imagine how stressed you must be feeling, how long have you had your sofa? I had a similar experience yours, myself :-(

hello all....

well...er....after your suggestions...i 'remembered' our washing machine is a 8kg one....so managed to wash the cushions 1 by one....at a 60 degree wash with zoflora rose disinfectant....and then each one took 3 hours to dry in tumble dryer!!!!
(they were a tight fit and reguired repositioning every 20 mins or so....so have not had a relaxing week!!!!)

but we do now have 4 clean and dry cushions....and the last 2 that i had not washed...look terrible against them.... so next week will do those two.

schroeder the making new foam squares is such a great idea!!!!

liz what made all this worse is that i have OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder)... so once i started this mission...i was unable to function in any other way....and the 'smell' i could smell which prompted me to do this washing ...well noone else noticed it...one of my OCD irrationalities is being convinced my house smells....and doing all this just made the cushions REALLY smell...and others noticed it.

but they are now smelling of roses!!!

i sprayed my hanging baskets with weedkiller this week too...so spent half an hour drenching them with a hose pipe...

and years ago...was chuffed to bits when i 'discovered' how shiney our old fashioned enamel bath became after i cleaned it with toilet 'limescale remover gel'.....that was until the next moring when it had dryed to a chalky powdery finish.
DH had to respray it with enamel paint...

so this sofa disaster is one of many cockups i have caused!!!

Hi MrsForgetful,

It all sounds like a lot of hard work, even if it is one of your many disasters! :-)

Have you considered maybe getting a new sofa, to save yourself any further trouble?

Try puttin them in the car overnight. It might work to dry them. We do that with all our wet gear like wetsuits and stuff during the summer.

MsAppleseed · 06/05/2012 15:22

The same thing just happened with me! I have OCD too and it seems I was the only one who thought the sofa cushion smelled. So I took it into the bathtub and washed it until the water coming out of it was crystal clear. It's been out in the sun for 3 days now and the inside of the cushion is still wet! What did you end up doing?

Zipt · 14/05/2020 07:40

After unsuccessfully trying to dry my sofa cushions after washing them in the shower and treading on them to bring out the dirt. After three days in the sun they were still sodden wet. Eventually I used my bodyweight to fold them in half and used four bungee straps pulled as tight as pos on each one. I couldn't believe the water that came out of them especially when I stood on them whilst laid on clean towels. After leaving them four days in a warm room, periodically squeezing them I removed the bungee straps. They were dry and ready to be put back onto my sofa...Hallelujah!!!🙂
