Hi, Could someone please point me in the right direction. Without a calculator how do you work out 134 divided by 17 on paper.

Long division doesn't help because 17 is bigger than the first 13 part.

Are you just meant to go by estimates - it's obviously between 10 and 5 so start with 6, 7 etc?

If someone could tell me the method name to look up I'd be really grateful. Thanks

You learn your 17 times table
17
34
51
68
85
102
119
136

so from that you know it’s 7 and remaining 15 so would be 0.88.

so it’s 7.88. I don’t know the term for it sorry it’s just the times tables to me.

Chunking method i.e. write out the 17 times table. Assuming you’re in England, that’s how it’s taught now.

Thanks - I'm guessing with chunking you would start with an estimate as there is no point in starting at 1x7 (you can see from a glance it's less than ten times and more than five times). But then do you encourage the children to break the number so you are actually working with the ten and seven (or 15 and 2) times tables

so they end up with 10x7+7x7 before working out the remainder
