hello lovely mums and dads. I rarely write on here but I’m sick with worry and I know there’s a fountain of knowledge can tap into with you guys. I have a bright kid, just turned 8yr old in year 3, will be starting yr 4 this sept. I had a tutor(nabbed her old teacher) who came to the house 1 hour a week from November last year until about a month ago. I have no real clue when it comes to explaining homework etc and I have a real fear of maths(I don’t let it show to my DC) so I stopped and allowed the tutor to school her. Sadly the tutor can no longer teach my child and DC (and I) just feel lost. DC's confidence seems to have plummeted and I really want to help. her puma/pira scores are typically v. low the school seem unbothered but it worries me Incase she slips too far! i found my DD in tears at her desk yesterday in front of her homework. I'd like to get another tutor for her but in the meantime how can i support her myself. Also any recommendations on how to get a tutor please im open to online work but to get a face to face tutor would be the ideal. Also any inspirational turned it around for your kid type stores. I feel a little deflated and need some hope. Thank you for reading!

@Meraki If this is about comprehending wordy problems, then your DC is possibly being taught RUCESAC or similar at school.

These things help

  • drawing pictures

  • simplifying the numbers, then it becomes almost instinctive what needs doing

  • and for my DDs, if they can't work out which operand they need, it is probably divide

You are talking about puma/pira scores which isn't something I recognise, so I'm now thinking maybe you aren't in the UK?
