Please help with this. I just can’t seem to figure it out and myself and daughter are struggling a little here. Thank you.

Looking at the top too lines they are similar - 2 squares plus triangle = 56 and 2 squares minus triangle = 32.

Putting those together you can find the value of both square and triangle (56-32 = 2 triangles)

Then the rest follows through. Shout if that doesn't help...

ZingyLemon · 25/01/2022 19:36

Oh I see they are pentagons not squares 😂

cherryonthecakes · 25/01/2022 19:38

Add line 1 and line 2 vertically
4 pentagon = 88
1 pentagon = 22

Tequilamockinbird · 25/01/2022 19:39

56-32 will give you the value of 2 triangles. So 1 triangle = 12. The rest should then be easy to work out.

cherryonthecakes · 25/01/2022 19:41

22+22+triangle = 56
Triangle = 56-44 =12

cherryonthecakes · 25/01/2022 19:42

2 diamond = 56-12

Diamond =22

BuanoKubiamVej · 25/01/2022 19:44

Yes the blue triangle is easy to work out as @ZingyLemon explains.

Then as (2 red pentagons) plus (one blue triangle) is 56 then one red pentagon is half of (56 minus one blue triangle) and one pink diamond is half of (86 minus one blue triangle)

It's really important for kids to get lots of practice at these puzzles so if it's still not coming easily by the time she's worked through this, you can make equivalent puzzles easily yourself. Pick 3 different numbers and work out 3 different simple sums using them just like this example, then write out those sums replacing each of your original numbers with a symbol - you can use fruit or animal emojis or anything to help your DC engage with it, just give lots of practice.

Taz786 · 25/01/2022 19:45

These are the answers. I thought one triangle would = 12 but the answer is 11. I’m still confused on how they got these answers.

(Posters who just write out the answers are less helpful than they think they are though)

BuanoKubiamVej · 25/01/2022 19:49

The difference between 54 and 32 is 22, but that's 2 blue triangles not one. The value of a blue triangle is half that.

steppemum · 25/01/2022 19:54

OP in your second picture the numbers are different?

In the original the first linadded up to 56 and in this one 54.
The third line was 86 and now 93?

MaizeAmaze · 25/01/2022 19:54

I agree with the official answers.

How old is your child?

I subtracted 54 from both sides of the first equation, and subtracted 32 from both sides if the second equation.
Then, since both equal 0, they must equal each other. The pentagons disappear and you get 2 triangles are 11.

Put that info into one of the first two equations to get the value for a pentagon. And the same info into the third equation to get the diamond answer.

BuanoKubiamVej · 25/01/2022 19:57

When doing these kinds of questions you can always check your answers by putting them into the original sums again.

With your original answers - yes 16 + 16 + 22 = 54, but 16 + 16 - 22 = 10 so that proves that wasn't the right answer.

Whereas if you'd got 11 originally and then used the first sum to calculate the 21.5 for the pentagon as half of 43, you can then check the numbers in the second sum by verifying that 43-11 is indeed 32.

MaizeAmaze · 25/01/2022 19:57

Oh, just seen the 2 pictures are different. The picture in your first post would have a triangle with value 12.

dingledanglewoowoo · 25/01/2022 20:00

Your pictures are different in the first and second @Taz786 !

Morechocmorechoc · 25/01/2022 20:04

The top pic shows the third line equalling 86 and your answer sheet shows it equalling 93. That may be the first issue! On the top pic it's 11, 22, 37.

If you start doing halves then can do a few options. This is very strange.

LittleMissPollyHadADolly · 10/09/2024 20:48
Confused
TeenToTwenties · 11/09/2024 09:41

Add the first two lines.
That gives 4 Pentagons = 56+32=88
Divide by 4, gives 1 pentagon = 22.

Substitute into first equation 22 + 22 + triangle = 56
So 44 + triangle = 56
Subtract 44, Triangle = 56-44 = 12

Third equation Triangle + 2 diamond = 86
Substitute value for triangle 12 + 2 diamond = 86
Subtract 12, 2 diamond = 86-12=74
Divide by 3, Diamond = 37

The questions with answers in your second photo are different from your original question, so no wonder the answers are different.

These are the answers. I thought one triangle would = 12 but the answer is 11. I’m still confused on how they got these answers.

The answers are wrong because the question has changed!

56, 32 and 86 have changed to 54, 32 and 93

This happens when you refresh the page - the numbers in the question change.

I hope you understood the method.

The question is basically about algebra, using symbols instead of letters.
