My son's school have gone digital and will only send homework on Microsoft teams. My son has no way to do his homework on a digital device. I have a laptop but it was extremely expensive and he is not allowed to use it. The school think this is unreasonable and are not sending homework on paper therefore my son has not done any homework since he started in september. I don't see why I should risk my very expensive laptop being broken. Side note my son destroys tech on a regular basis I can not count the amount of headsets and controllers we go through. I think I buy a headset a month. He is getting a mobile phone for Christmas so I am hoping that he can do it on there.

Buy him a cheap tablet?

Supervise him using your laptop?

2reefsin30knots · 11/12/2021 19:40

How old is he? If he's old enough for a phone surely he should be well beyond not being trustworthy with a laptop?

Seriously- he can't do his homework on a phone. Buy him a chromebook.

RuthW · 11/12/2021 19:42

Laptops or similar are essential at secondary school. You are holding him back.

Invisimamma · 11/12/2021 19:43

Pretty standard for schools not to give paper homework now. Do you have access to a cheap tablet or chrome book? I got my son a laptop for £110 on black friday, it's fine for homework purposes.

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 11/12/2021 19:56

Supervise him doing his homework?

Dies the school run a homework club?

Pieceofpurplesky · 11/12/2021 19:59

Don't buy him headphones if he is breaking them. Put the money towards a laptop he can use.
Or supervise him on yours. His homework needs to be done. He must feel awful in school being the one not doing it as his mum won't let him

Wolfiefan · 11/12/2021 19:59

How old is he?
If he’s destroying headsets at that rate I wouldn’t buy a mobile phone. He needs to learn to take more care of his tech.

InTheLabyrinth · 11/12/2021 20:13

How old is he? Combining the since ye started in Sept, and him getting a phone, I'm guessing just started secondary? He ideally needs a device to do homework on. Or access to one at school before ge comes home. Is there a homework club?
No access to homework in secondary isnt setting him up for sucess. I'd stop replacing headsets and controllers tho!

He's 7 but thanks for the concern 😊

Don’t buy him a phone. He’s 7. Buy a laptop instead.

@Theremoresefulday

Yes, it's difficult for him to get anything done unless I sit with him and spur him on constantly. He is only 7 and gets distracted extremely easily and homework that would take other children 10minutes ends up being a 2-hour ordeal. I'm going to have to have a think about how i'm going to improve things for him. he has a kindle tablet but you can't get teams on it. ill sort something out.

What was your question or did you come on to note that your son is going to be held back educationally because you can't teach him to use a computer properly?
Keepitmum · 11/12/2021 20:55

He is only 7 sop we haven't got to the secondary school essential stage yet. I would hate to hold him back but I'm a single mum and I have to be careful that whatever i buy him isn't going to get wrecked within a few weeks. maybe ill try getting him a cheap second-hand one for now and see how he gets on.

Maybe a laptop or tablet for his birthday in February. He asked for a phone for Christmas maybe I should have brought him a tablet compatible with windows. I'll look into it.

No that's the problem there's no homework club he does go to an afterschool club I pay a small fortune for. They like it to be play related though and don't like them doing homework there.

You can’t blame people for thinking he was secondary age when you didn’t say his age.

It isn’t usual for kids to start school at 7 in the uk.

Undertheoldlindentree · 11/12/2021 21:09

I bought my daughter a second-hand Dell laptop for £60, purely for homework. Still going strong 2 years later.

WinoAnon · 11/12/2021 21:11

Wow this is a primary school? Do they have spare ipads from lockdown?

I would get a tablet over a mobile phone. Generally a 7 year old doesn't need a mobile phone. If he can't look after it then it would be for homework only. I wouldn't replace any headsets or controllers if he is purposely breaking them, why would you expect him to respect these expensive things when you just replace them immediately?

He's not only just starting school for the first time. I meant starting for the new year in September. I've reread my post and I can see where the confusing is coming from. It's my first day on mum'snet and I'm just not used to writing posts. Sorry for confusing you everyone

This thread is so weird.
You’ve bought yourself an expensive laptop but you aren’t willing to facilitate his education? How much homework can he possibly have at age 7??

Just sit with him and The Precious Laptop for an hour once or twice a week, get the homework done and then put it away again.

2reefsin30knots · 12/12/2021 09:23

He doesn't need a phone at 7. It would have been much better to buy him a cheap chromebook instead.
