Hi,
There have been so many tears over this maths work that I just want to know the answers (not to tell her but to guide her). She has been very stressed recently as the teaching in lockdown at her school was not great and now she is really struggling to catch up.any help will be appreciated

First one 95m, 25cm?

Blueappletree · 19/03/2021 19:40

You just need to scale by the numbers given. So the first one,
1cm converts into 5m, so 19 cm x 5 = 95m. Also 105 /5 = 21 cm. I think.

LittleMissNaice · 19/03/2021 19:41

Second 86m, 8.8cm

LittleMissNaice · 19/03/2021 19:43

Third 600m, 2.4cm
Fourth 4.2 and 7.3

titchy · 19/03/2021 19:47

How can you guide her unless you know how someone came to the answers? it's a scaling question, so follow @Blueappletree's post for the method. If you understand that enough to guide her you can work out the answers yourself!

Talking through the first one.
The scale says 1cm is 5m.
So 19cm is 19x5=95m
So the 95m answer needs to go on the short side of the blue box.

The long side on the large shape is 105m, so you need to divide by the 5m from the scale to get back to 21cm as that answer.

Thank-you! This is a very helpful explanation for my daughter.

That’s the mymaths site. There should be some supporting resources on there somewhere.
Previous replies explain it well.

Thank-you! Yes I have looked into this more and just realised it's a site that has lessons on it. I think my Dd was just being lazy so I will have to monitor her more closely it seems

It's scale drawing so she needs to multiply and divide by the scale. The first scale is 1:5 so multiple and divide by 5.

Lougle · 19/03/2021 21:05

She may be confused because they give one side of the small shape and are expecting her to multiply by the scale to find the same side of the big shape. Then they are giving one side of the big shape and they are expecting her to divide by the scale to find the same side of the small shape.
