  1. paint is not water soluble, the paint needs to dissolve in order to run the chromatography
SweepTheHalls · 20/11/2020 13:26

This is called chromatography. The paint samples move up the paper based upon their size and solubility. You need to have a matching pattern of the known paint to the sample. Does that help?

MILdesperandum · 20/11/2020 13:26

The diagram with the dots in columns shows how many component colours Or pigments were used to make the paint. Chromatography separates the mixed paint into the colours that were usd to make it. Eg There are 3 spots above “A” which means the gatepost paint uses 3 pigment colours.

great, thanks and so for 6 , they could take a sample from a post office van to compare and for 7 they could compare the vehicle paint with the sample from the gate post. Is that right for 6 and 7 then?

Yep sounds good. They could also inspect both vehicles for scratches Wink
