Question in a book, with answers, but I dont understand the answer...
Which sentance has 'after' used as a conjunction?
After the film, we went for something to eat.
He drove off quickly after the football match.
After I finish reading, I'm going to draw a picture.

My 9 yr old and I are both hopeless at this sort of stuff. The given answer is After I finish reading, I'm going to draw a picture. If this is correct, how is the first sentance not using after as a conjunction?

Also, is there a REALLY simple primary grammar book. The CGP guides and Google dont make sense to me (I'm dyslexic, if that affects stuff).

Hi can I suggest you look at atom learning - they current have a free English course which is on zoom. I think it is 1 hour a day for Monday to Friday.

It is really good. They try cover key stage 2 as a catch up course.

It is a live lesson.

You don't need to join up with them.

After can be used as a conjunction so you can use it across 2 phrases .. I am going to have a think and provide an answer. I find 11 plus stuff hard and I think it is great you are starting with year 4 prep.

I don't get the answer either Smile

I don't get the answer either. ...
TEFL teacher for years...English degree...
Honestly who makes this guff up.

I think it's not the middle one because the football match is a noun. So after is being used as a preposition.

I used Visual Guide to Grammer and Punctiation by Dorling Kindersley (DK). I bought it in The Works. It doesn't contain everything needed for y6 Sat's. But most of it is there.

Mumdiva99 · 23/07/2020 08:02

.....OK....i obviously don't agree with the answer given....

reefedsail · 23/07/2020 08:10

For SATs purposes, the reason it's the last one is because the clause that 'after' is in contains a verb (reading).

If there is a verb- conjunction
If there is no verb- preposition

This shouldn't be in a Y4 book as it's Y6 content.

So "after" can be used as a preposition or conjuction.

If it's used as a preposition, it's followed by a noun (sentences 1 and 2).

If it's used as a conjunction, it connects two phrases. The only sentence with two distinct phrases is the last one. "I finish reading" + "I'm going to draw a picture".

Hence sentence 3!

It was a zombie but I learnt something anyway - wow such hard stuff for 10 year olds to ge their head around!

Hmm, looks like everyone disagrees with the answer.
As for the book, try to look for it here. There are lots of them, for free.
