Can anyone help with this one, ds is stuck. He is fine with quadratics when they ask for form y = (x + a)2 + b, but just cant remember how to do this one and we are struggling finding online help 😭

Write down the equation of the graphs shown below, which have the form y = ax2 + b.

As (0,2) is on the graph, you know that b must be 2, because when you square 0 and multiply it by anything, you get 0, so that whole first term will be 0.

Then substitute in the other point (-2,,14) into the equation
so 14 = a (-2)^2 + 2
If you solve that:
12 = a(-2)^2
12 = 4a
3 = a

You then know both a and b.

y = 3x^2 + 2 and you can test by substituting in those points to check that it works.

b=2 as it crosses the y axis at 2.

then you can work out a by doing (-2)^2 = 4 .

a x 4 + 2 = 14 .

a x4 =12

So a=3

Perfect, thanks for the explaination @BlackberriesAndCream

Got it now!
