Hi,

Can anybody help a father who is not very good at maths with the following questions;

40 children in Year 5 chose their favourite breakfast from banana porridge or yogurt and fruit.

The result showed a ratio of 3:5 with most children choosing yogurt and fruit.

How many children preferred banana porridge?

According to me 3:5 of 40 is 24 which means 40 = 24 = 16.
The answer however is 15 so I am not sure why.

40 children in total, ratio totals 8.

So 40/8 =5

5 x 3 = 15

3:5 isn't three fifths, it's three people choosing banana for every five choosing yoghurt.

This means that if we have 8 people, 3 will choose porridge and 5 yoghurt. So, divide 40 by 8 (3+5) to get 5.

3 x 5 = 15 choose porridge
5 x 5 = 25 choose yoghurt

To check your answer is correct, check the ratio.

The ratio of porridge : yoghurt is 15:25. Divide both by 5 and you get 3:5 as needed.

You take the number of people and divide by the total of the ratio. Then multiply that by each side of the ratio.

It’s ratio not a fraction

3:5 means for every 3 eating porridge there are 5 eating yogurt

As there are 40 children 40/8 x5 or 40/8 x3 gives the answer
