Hi, my 9 year old daughter answered to question below as 47 and 3 however the correct answers are 200 and 200. I’m confused why as her answers seem logical to me. Thanks

It's asking to round the number to the nearest 100, not what would you add to get to the next 100.

LemonRedwood · 27/05/2019 15:16

*nearest hundred and nearest 10, sorry.

Myneighboursnorlax · 27/05/2019 15:17

It’s very ambiguously worded. I would have read it the same as your daughter, but I can also see how it was actually meant.

Guardsman18 · 27/05/2019 15:17

I'm not the best at maths but is it that after 50 you go to the next 100's?

Hopefully a teacher will come along soon and explain it better!

suze28 · 27/05/2019 15:20

153 rounded to the nearest 100 number is 200 as you have 5 tens so need to round up.
197 rounds up to 200 as you need to look at the ones digit, so 7, this time.

flumpybear · 27/05/2019 15:21

Yes just simple rounding up and following the rules they provide in the question

wanderings · 27/05/2019 15:21

That's a good point. I answered 200 to both without hesitation, but I teach maths so I saw what I was expecting to see. I can see how a very literal reading of the question would give you the answers 47 and 3.

It would have been clearer if it had said rounded to the nearest 100.

suze28 · 27/05/2019 15:23

I'm a Yr4 teacher and we teach the vocabulary that nearest always means rounding.

Taz786 · 27/05/2019 16:31

Thank you.

I'd assume that from the context of the preceeding questions she would have known she was rounding rather than adding on, her answers are correct but not for the question she's being asked
