Yr3 Determiners A and An

My 7 year old has to explain how he knows when to use the A or An determiner in a sentence. He knows (mostly) which one to use but can't explain how he knows. I've looked up the rule but it's all too over-complicated for a 7 year old. I'm struggling to simplify it. Can anyone give me a child- friendly explanation?

Vowel sounds.

A, E, I, O, U = an

Consonants = a

Roughly - it's slightly more complicated than that. Use that as a start.
