Can any historians help DD out?

Hello
DD has to talk/teach 15 minutes about the peace and green movements of the 70s/8Os focusing on Germany but can mention global perspectives.

How does this sound?

Go over timeline and focus on cause-effect ie why we protest as a kick against what has happened/is happening/will happen

Give specific examples
eg anti nuclear weapons and power following hiroshima
anti war sentiment following Vietnam
anti nuclear arms following Cuban crisis, during race war, following Nato double-track decision
and the prominence of green party as a result
alongside the German forest damage/increase in water/oil/land use/rubbish after rebuilding/reindustrialisation

That's an awful bloomin' lot for 15 minutes and he wants it to be fun!?
Aside from getting classmates to make a human peace chain, sing the chorus to give peace a chance or playing Russians by Mr Sting, any ideas on how to make it fun?

Cnd, camps outside US air bases in UK?

I'm not a historian, but grew up in that era.

It was the time of the Cold War. Germany was divided into East and West by the Iron Curtain.Thereous peace initiatives and campaigns, though I don't think I can give a particularly Germany flavour. CND and Greenpeace were around. People were very aware of the effects of the nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. They feared any repeat.

Vietnam and Cuba had been a shock to America, which was (and still probably is) crusading against communism.

Perestroika was the name of the game when cooperation first really began to happen between President Reagan, Margaret Thatcher and Mikhail Gorbachev (USSR). I think it laid the groundwork which led to the fall of the Berlin wall and the Iron Curtain.

Probably not really what you are looking for entirely, but my main memories anyway.

Various peace initiatives. Not sure what autocorrect was trying to do there.

It's basically about German being flat / a hole in on map if the cold war would have turned into a nuclear war...
So in a way environment and destruction of war (nuclear weapons and chemical weapons) go hand in hand.
Also, there was a lot about acid rain and the effect on forests... (Clutching at straws...)

As I understand it, the 1973 oil crisis was significant in Germany in terms of the rise of the Greens as it led to an upsurge in support for nuclear power and plans for nuclear power stations without there being much public debate.

Chernobyl also needs a mention. The Greens saw a big jump in support following that.

Cheers for responses so far - topseyt that's exactly the backdrop (they've done Cuba...perestroika and wall coming down will follow but she got the protests bit, bless...and there's a lot, it's trying to hang it altogether/frame it in an interesting way). We live in Germany so I don't mind helping her a bit cos she has to say it all in German. But he wants it to be entertaining tempted to blow up 99 red balloons but will resist

When does she have to make the presentation and how old is she, Ozzy? I can ask my colleague at work tomorrow for any possible ideas for injecting humour. She's got an amazing political knowledge of Germany during that era and may well be able to come up with something to draw a laugh.

That would be really kind thanks! Next Thursday and they are all 16. The textbook is dry as anything - as in dull, not funny - I can see why the teacher's doling out topics, I couldn't get through it personally.

Glad you mentioned 99luft balloons. Also she could have some Euro song contest in there with Nicole and a little peace. I think the fact that the peace message led German popular music to be a voice in UK culture is interesting.
