How would you solve: 4z/9 (over 9) - 5 = -2

DD is stumped.

I have done: 4z/9 = -2 + 5

4z/9 = 3

so it should be 27/9 = 3/1, but that doesn't work out for z. Gah.

Help??

You were right up to

4z/9 = 3

Not sure where the next line has come from....

I would then go

4z = 9x3
4z = 27
Z = 27/4

Keepsmiling1 · 20/06/2018 16:03

4z/9 - 5 = -2

4z/9 = 3

4z = 27

Z = 6.75

PetraDelphiki · 20/06/2018 16:04

Why doesn’t it work? Multiply both sides by 9 gives

4z=27

Z = 6.75

WhollyFather · 20/06/2018 16:05

Is there a typo in the question? Could it be (4z/9) - 5 = 2?
That would give 4z/9 = 7, 4z = 56 so z would equal 19.

If it is minus 2, I have to agree with you.

Cagliostro · 20/06/2018 16:06

I would just assume it's expecting a decimal or fraction answer?

multivac · 20/06/2018 16:07

multiply each side by 9, so 4z = 27; z = 6.75

Amber0685 · 20/06/2018 16:12

4z/9 - 5 = -2 (add 5 to each side)
4z/9 = 3 (times each side by 9)
4z = 27 (divide each side by 4)
Z = 27/4

(How old is your daughter, by the way?)
