DD10 homework, all going well with algebra/simultaneous equations ... Until she asked for help with the last one .. And I can't help her. Help required please, so I can pretend to know and help her work it out ..

X - 10 + y = 12 and X - y = 6
X = ?
Y= ?

I am really hoping I will kick myself when dear mumsnetters explain 😆🙏😣

REarrange second equation to:

X=6+y

Substitute into first equation to solve for Y

(6+y) - 10 +y = 12
-4+2y=12
2y=16
Y = 8

Then subs. Into equation 2

X-8 =6
X=14

Rearrange first equation
X + y = 22
Second equation
X = 6 + y

Sub eqn 2 into 1

6+2y = 22
2y = 16
Y = 8
=> x = 14

You can add the left hand sides and right hand sides of both equations.

X - 10 + y + x - y = 12 + 6
2x -10 = 18
2x = 28
X = 14

Sub in 2nd eqn
14 - y = 6
Y = 8
