Can't for the life of me figure out how you're meant to do it the correct way with carrying tens etc!!!
Feel so stupid!
TIA

You can't take away two separate numbers at the same time if you see what I mean. Either take one away then the other or add the two numbers to be taken away together and take that away from the original.

Id add the two lower figures first so
2.65
0.17
2.82

Then
5.00

  • 2.82

You cant minus 2,from zero so you cross the five out and make it a.four and carry the ten over, you then cross the ten put make it a nine and carry the ten over (always going right).

winchester1 · 22/03/2016 19:14

Sorry posted to soon

You then have

4.9(10)

  • 2.82

So working right to left the columns are 10-2
9-8
4-2

Giving
2.18

Dies that make sense?

Doh! Perfect ladies
Had figured out how to do it by adding the 2 numbers to be subtracted together first then subtracting (as you have suggested) but didn't realise you couldn't take 2 separate numbers at the same time!never have guessed I got a* at GCSE level maths...Blush
