help with short division please!

Am 'helping' DS (year 6) with maths homework.

But one of the problems doesn't make sense to me. Have worked all others out correctly (checked with calculator) and can't figure out what I'm doing wrong with this one, even though I'm using the same method.

So it's 2453 divided by 8

So the way we did it was, 8 into 24 goes 3, 8 into 53 goes 6, remainder 5, making the answer 36 (r5) which is obviously not correct. The calculator showed us the answer should be 306 not 36 but where did that zero come from??

8 into 24 goes 3 is right.

But then you must say 8 into 5 goes 0 times, remainder 5.

Strictly speaking, this is what happens at the beginning: 8 into 2 goes 0 times, remainder 2, which you then link to the next digit to make 24.

Divide 24 by 8 so that gives 3. You can't divide 5 by 8 so that's where the 0 goes and then you divide 53 by 8 which gives the 6 and then you have 5 remaining so 306 r5

8 into 23 = 3
8 into 5 = 0
8 into 53 = 6

You still have to answer the third number rather than carry it over and ignore it (if that makes sense)

306.625

Should really be doing decimal remainders by Year 6!

As above for the error with the O, and then put a couple of 0's after the decimal point and continue to carry over and divide. (i.e. how many 8's in 50 (the 5 has carried over), 6 remainder 2..then how many 8's in 20, 2 remainder 4...then how many 8's in 40...5)

You might be better to think of it as
8 into 2 = 0
8 into 24 = 3
8 into 5 = 0
8 into 53 = 6

Does that make more sense? Do you now understand why you can leap into 8 into 24 but not 8 into 53?

Yes that does make sense but...we haven't done it like that so far and managed to get the answers right.

For example, 7864 divided by 9. So:
9 into 78 goes 8 remainder 6. So then we write a little 6 next to the big 6...
9 into 66 goes 7 remainder 3. So we write a little 3 next to the big 4...
9 into 34 goes 3 remainder 7.
The answer is 873 and 7/9 which is correct.

How comes I didn't have to go, 9 into 6 = 0 that time?

Needaninsight it's a SATS buster workbook, so going through all different methods I guess.
