Hi I have children aged 6 (now at end of year 1) and 8 (now ending year 3). We live overseas but they are at a school teaching the UK curriculum.

We are aware of some differences about homework expectations between teachers at the school and we would like to know what is the 'norm' back in the UK.

In year 1, how much homework do your kids get i.e. what and how often?

In year 3, how much homework do your kids get i.e. what and how often, and is this dependent on their ability e.g. do more able children get more or different homework to others?

We're also curious about approaches to learning spellings and times tables.

Looking forward to Sept, what level of homework would you expect in year 2 and 4?

Many thanks

DS1 is in year 2 - he gets one piece of literacy and one piece of maths a week, plus his reading (15 minutes every night). Next year he will be at a new school where I'm told he will be expected to do 25 minutes home work each night. The homework is tailored to the children's grading groups.

Sometimes his maths homework this year has been to complete a timetable square (1 to 10 timetables). Other times the literacy has been to learn spellings but apparently they mostly learn spellings in class.
