Viking longboat model

DS has to construct a Viking longboat that will be used in a race across a short stretch of water. He's allowed some help (he's in year 3), so, on the advice of staff at our local Hobbycraft store, we made a mould out of oasis, then he cut up rolls of plaster and laid the plaster around the mould. He's painted the boat plus made a really nice red and white stripey sail. We stuck the mast on the boat with some plasticine today - and when we tested it in a sink of water, the bloody thing capsized and sank. It's also clearly not waterproof.

I hold my hands up that I am not at all crafty, but given the excellent help that was given in this section recently about a model plane, I was wondering if anyone has ever done this before and if they had any advice. We have 2 days to make a new and better one!

Try painting the entire boat with PVA glue and using a sealant underneath.

Well done your DS! not the easiest thing to make.

You'll need to get more weight down where the keel would be.

Half a 2 ltr bottle of coke, lengthways.
Wrap in brown masking tape, faux wood stylee.
Stick in mast
Glue on cardboard shields
Weigh down with coppers glued to inner base.

You wonderful people! Will try to fix the boat he's already got with sealant and PVA glue and try to weigh it down. If not, will go for the coke bottle idea - love the fake wood/masking tape idea!

Off topic, and not to be heard if you're feeling at all sensitive... but your thread title made me think of one of the most moving modern poems ever:
