Spellings

My DS forgot to bring his spelling book home on Friday evening and has a spell test on Monday mornings. I told him to ask the teacher if you could get the book and have a quiet run through the spellings before school started or even sit outside with it in the playground and have a quick practice. When I picked him up this eve he was quite upset as he got a very low score. Seems our school has now developed a policy whereby kids are not allowed to enter the building before the start of school day, and consequently he was refused entry etc. Why do teachers and schools become overly officious?

Security. Following Dunblane. God forbid it happens again.

Firstly, the school is very small (only 8 in year group) and the teachers are indoors prior to the school starts.
Since this incident the school have now relaxed their "rule" as many parents have also complained about being unable to raise any issues etc. to the teachers.
Secondly, I do concede that this is a lesson learned and we will endeavour to ensure his homework book is brought home on Friday's, we do not however buy into the "low score, so what" train of thought. I do care that both my children try hard at school and do well. Our dd has recently won a scholarship to a very good public school on the basis of her efforts with our support and we will try our best to make sure our ds also achieves his own goals.
Thirdly, he re-tested on the spellings the following week and we were happy with the results.
Without wanting to place our children under undue pressure, we only get one chance at education...we have to give it our best shot!

How can he have resat the test the following week, when the following week hasn't happened yet?
You said this happened on Friday/Monday. It's Tuesday now?

?? He originally did the test on Monday March 12th, after forgetting to bring the book home on Friday 9th. Then he re sat the test on Monday 19th March!
Is this really relevant? (Yawn)

Sounds like pressure to me, poor kids
