Hi

We are thinking of starting French with our 9 year old, does anyone have any recommendations on the best way to start or a good set of books or perhaps a website ?

Thanks

You could try SKOLDO, although it's aimed at younger children. Book 1 would be the one you would need. However, I wouldn't recommend Book 2 - it's just not a coherent way to learn French.

Un Deux Trois also looks quite good, although I have never used it. There is a second book for years 5 and 6 but I think you need to do the first one first IYSWIM.

Another alternative would be Galore Park - "So You Really Want to Learn French", which is excellent but a very academic/grammar-based approach.

Is there a Nintendo DS in your house? We used this and this and both are good. We don't have the French, we have the first in Japanese and the second in German but I think the French would be similar. The Mind Your Language one is based on a game and is very entertaining to play in its own right. I think a 9 year old would be fine with them. It's a fun way to learn the basics.

Thanks for the suggestions, I will look at them properly later.
