What are the practicalities? Do you just stop sending your child to school or do you have to put some kind of plan in place which needs approval?

Any advice much appreciated

You simply send a letter to the school. here is a form letter.

They are responsible for informing the local authority, not you.

So ALL you have to do is send the letter. You are already responsible, in law, for the education of your child. If you decide to HE, all you are doing is choosing no longer to delegate that responsibility to a school.

The LA will get in touch with you, almost certainly, asking for the moon on a stick. Don't respond to them until you've had advice from home edders here or elsewhere The guidelines within which they are supposed to operate are here. I'd read that carefully. They should allow you a period of time to get established before they ask for evidence of the education. I'd say 3 months as an absolute minimum. And then YOU are the one who gets to decide what sort of evidence to provide. You certainly do not have to have a visit from some ignorant judgeypants ex-headmaster...

Yes, you need to deregister him from their school register or he'll just be truanting, but that's all you have to do
