Home Education - Ealing

I have an unusual situation in that I moved to Ealing last term and my daughter was allocated a school in the Greenford area. This is over 4 miles away from where I live. I do not drive and it takes me an hour to get there on public transport. She is on lots of waiting lists but there is a problem with over-subscription and I have been advised there may not be a local school place until next year. The journey at present involves taking my two year old on the journey which means he is travelling for four hours every day. This is not fair on him. Further, I am not happy with the school my daughter attends and feel their standards are very low. She is 5, just entering Year 1.

In this light I am considering home education until a place becomes available locally. I feel that I will do a better job than the school she is currently at. I am happy to undertake the requirements and guidelines so she will be up to date with the curriculum and then she can return to education - this could take a year or longer.

The main thing I am concerned about is taking her away from her peers. Does anyone know of a network for home educators or have any ideas? She loves playing with children her own age but I do not have any friends who have children age 5.

I am undecided what to do and would appreciate any opinions, ideas that people have.

I've been contacted recently by a friend of a friend with a similar situation. She's just moved from Berkshire to Perivale, which is v. close to Ealing, and is going to home-educate at least until a place comes up at a decent Catholic school. She has 3 boys of 7, 5 and 3, I believe. I've already told her to join Mumsnet (;-), and I'll mention you when I meet up with her.

Hi I think the home education group at the log cabin in Ealing is still going. If you go to yahoo groups and apply to join the west london home education group and post there you should get details. Also try this group here - central london home ed. It should have details of the parks group, which meets in parks all round london. I don't know if you can travel much but we're starting a group in putney/barnes area on Mondays, which will include some 5 year olds and I can send you details if you're interested. There are usually lots groups and outgoings to get involved in, it just sometimes takes a while to find stuff that suits you.

Am definitely going to keep an eye on the parks group and come along to that in the next couple of weeks. Also planning to go to the 'not back to school' picnic!

I have posted on the Yahoo group for more information about the Log Cabin as is just round the corner from me. I notice there haven't been any posts for a while though. Still, I am encouraged by what seems to be a positive network of people.

Putney is a little far for me at the moment as I do not drive and is awkward journey on transport, however, I have my driving test booked for 21 Sept so hopefully will be able to make it soon (fingers crossed!)

just joined up & saw your thread - similar to mine (in fact I think I may be the one Psychomumma was talking about) - anyway, we're in Perivale, have managed to get my 7 year old into a very good (I hope) Catholic school around the corner, the 3 year old starts nursery there next week - leaving me to home educate my 6 (last week) son(should be in year 1 too), would love to hear if you've managed to find any good groups around here as I think he is definitely at risk of becoming very bored with my company only very soon............ would love to hear your experineces.

Hello, I am based in Acton and I want to home school my 13yr old son. I know nothing about home schooling but my son is very academic and I do not feel the school is giving him the stimulation he needs. Can I still maintain an A* star for his GCSEs if I home school him? Is there a group I can join. I am still trying to find my way around this website so apologies in advance .
