i'm currently browsing the threads in the Home Ed topic.

After some debate with the ex we have settled on home-schooling ds who will be 4 in August. I'm reading on here and re-searching and getting a feel for how we progress with ds's education.

There's a lot of info in here but if someone has the time could you link me to any threads which are of particular importance?

at the moment we're taking the approach of ds just learning through every day activity, as he is a very physical and hands on child and trying to actively get him to learn anything is a waste of time at the moment

erm that's it really......i've never met anyone who HE'd their children so this is all new to me.

I'm Julie and I'm right at the other end of our HE journey as our youngest is 16 and going to FE college in September.
We deregistered all three more than eight years ago and never had a days regret.
We've had a wonderful life.

local to you.
That should keep you busy for a while!

I really would recommend you go and find home educators local to you, you should find them a great support and good to chat things over with.
And meet friends for you and your ds.

I second the EarlyYearsHE yahoo group - join it and introduce yoursel.

I'd also recommend reading some blogs - there is a blogring of early years home educators which I found really useful when I was just getting in to the idea of home educating.

Also, I'd suggest joining your local email list of home educators (should be able to find details on the education otherwise website, already linked to) and introducing yourself there. There may be groups that meet socially where there are other families with preschool aged children who you could make friends with, or even set up your own regular meet up at a park or something. A local support network can be invaluable.

i've joined my local Yahoo HE group (waiting to be accepted) and have found that there is a group meeting every Tuesday in the city.
I've also joined the ning group and there are some in my county.

When i move i will have adequate space to arrange some meets at my new house, if my local contacts are willing (tis an old victorian school house, how appropriate )

I can't really do much until we move, and we're still in the 'poke your solicitor every day' phase of that.

DS's grandma is a qualified teacher/educational psychologist who runs a private tutoring practice, and she is fully supporting us HE'ing ds. (i think she actually very pleased, as she deals with the failings of our local schooling on a daily basis)
We have thought very hard about taking this approach and discussed that we know many people who have the skill and knowledge to help ds with subjects we may not be so strong on (science for example) and we are confident that we can give him a much better education than he would receive in school.

yes it is, though the main bedroom is up a staircase which is more like a ladder......so to avoid night time trips to the loo we've bought a chamber pot

have been having a lovely chat with a local HE'er who i contacted on the ning site and exchanged e-mails with another. There is a regular meet in a village that i know reasonably well, so it looks like it won't take me long to make friends.

Oh, glad you've hooked up with some people on there. I've met 2 families from that site.

It's funny, because I used to always tell my dc not to give details or ever meet up with "strangers from the internet".

A huge percentage of my rl HE friends are from meeting up with people I've "met" on the net
