Hi,

my dd is 7 and we have been he'ing for about 6 months now. We are really loving it and I know we made the right choice as she is just such a happier girl now!

Before we took her out of school she had just completed 'quest testing' which had highlighted problems with her reading.

She was diagnosed with meares Irlen around the same time by the ophthalmologist and has been given coloured sheets to read with. They have helped but I know Meares Irlen and Dyslexia very often go hand in hand and I was just wondering how I would go about getting her tested?

My LA contact is away until next week and I'm impatient!

Also, we live in scotland if this makes any difference....

do you have a local dyslexia association? We have been to our local one for the last couple of months, and I'd arranged to take ds1 (who's also 7) to the meeting last night. well the relief was a picture. one of the advisers there went through some stuff with him, and a few of them elaborated on what i had told him about dyslexia.
We're not HE-ers, though i have seriously considered it, but he is at a fantastic school and they are doing some excellent work with him.

Also our optician said that he could refer us in to the local university dyslexia prog to get some work done on finding out if overlays and stuff worked - but it sounds like you are doing great and you are on to that one already.
good luck!

Thanks for the link giggles.

They noticed the eye thing independently from her learning problems because she is so clumsy and her eyes hurt on bright days.

I'll check out the local organisations but I may just have to wait until my contact gets back!

Nissa - you can contact dyslexia scotland and dyslexia action. I have never contacted dyslexia scotland myself - just came upon the site. Dyslexia ACtion can arrange screening tests - but cost around £ 400.

I suggest you read this:
Is my child dyslexic?
www.aowm73.dsl.pipex.com/dyslexics/is_my_child.htm

And then this:
Should I have my child assessed?
www.aowm73.dsl.pipex.com/dyslexics/should_I_have.htm

I don't HE, but my ds was privatly assessed by an ed psychologist as he is in a private school.

This was 3 years ago and it cost us £350, but he now gets 10 hours of 1 to 1 support for dyspraxia
