Curriculum for Reception and KS1

I’m planning to home educate my child and I’m wondering which curriculum people chose for early primary stage and what you thought of it.

We didn't use a set curriculum at that age, and I wouldn't bother next time either. The EYFS framework linked above is written for nurseries, so much of it is about ratios and what settings have to record rather than anything you'd do at your kitchen table.

The one thing worth a proper scheme is phonics. The order you teach the sounds in genuinely matters and it's the bit that's hard to make up as you go along. Any of the well known ones will do, as long as you pick one and stay in its order.

For Year 1 and 2 the national curriculum programmes of study are free on gov.uk. You're under no obligation to follow them, but they work well as a list of what to cover eventually rather than a term by term plan.

My DD would be school age this year and is HE. We have started using jolly phonics which she loves but I have also planned it much slower than the programme suggests, added extra activities and combined with a handwriting curriculum from the US for letter formation. Then we will be using a maths curriculum from the US which will only need adapting for money. And a geography curriculum which is based on a US one but very heavily adapted myself. Otherwise we are doing science activities from a book and lots of reading.

MEP is a great math curriculum, especially for the price. Also check out numberblocks.

Thanks everyone. I’ll look into it. English and maths are my main concerns and there’s lots to look at here. It doesn’t help that I keep getting targeted ads for all sorts of curricula with all sorts of promises!
