education about death?

I'm looking for any ideas about how (and how much) to explain about death to my just 4 year old. He has become interested because of dead flies in the house! I don't think he really understands but he knows if they're dead they can't fly. Anyway, he asked me today if we will die one day. I came up with some waffly answer with a lot of erms about people who die usually being old or - er - very poorly and probably didn't help his understanding at all. Has anyone found a good way to explain what death means without sounding too scary. (He is very prone to fears - including the flies which is why he is interested in whether they are alive or dead - and I don't want to give him something else to panic about) We aren't religious so I'm not keen to talk to about 'heaven' as a definite. Help!

I like the book "Mayfly day". Just a picture book about how a mayfly lives for a day and lays its eggs and then dies because its day is over, and what a lovely day it was.
