Home ed

Do you get asked why your dc aren’t in school?

If so what do you say? First time being asked yesterday and felt really awkward so I just mumbled dc isn’t in school today.

Maybe because we’ve only just started homeschooling and I’m really worried about people reacting badly in front of dc if I say homeschooling. Already had that from family!

Very occasionally (as in very, very occasionally) and when people ask I just say that we home educate. Never had anyone say anything untoward , they’re usually just interested.

My kids are more than prepared to put people straight anyway to be honest.

I just say no, it’s a day at home today. The less random strangers know about your life, the better 🤷‍♀️ I’m not worried about judgment but I just really can’t be bothered to explain that we home ed (which is always followed up with questions) every time you need to nip out for a pint of milk 😂

No never, maybe this only happens to younger kids? Mine is 12 and we are never asked why she’s not at school. I would just say she doesn’t go to school, I wouldn’t lie that would be weird.

Very rarely and I just say they are home educated.

We started homeschooling last month so hopefully it’s a one off then.

When my daughter was out of school and had a tutor a few hours a week we would sometimes be out and about during the school day. Not doing anything "educational" but often boring mundane stuff like going to Sainsbury's.
Did anyone ask? No. Never. I actually don't think anyone cares.
There are always school age children out and about during typical school hours. I see them every day. There will be dozens of reasons they aren't at school. Is it my business? No.
If anyone ever did say anything my response would be "no not at school today" and not give details.
I'm not going to tell my daughter's private life to random people in the streets.

Soon HE will be as common as WFH, especially for teenagers who can access a much better education online, so seeing them out and about during school hours will be no big deal.

All the time especially as my eldest is a teen now. In all my years of home ed I’ve never had anyone react badly though, usually just curious about it.

I just happily say they are home Ed and smile! Usually very curious, happened many times and always very positive!
