Do home ed parents hire private tutors?

I’m thinking about being a private tutor. Could teach maths up to A level or beyond as I have a maths degree, or accountancy as I’m a qualified accountant. (Also have teaching experience). My problem is I want to do it while my kids are at school, so tutoring other school children wouldn’t be possible! So, how common is it for home educators to hire a tutor? Do you think there would be enough demand to make it a viable part time career option?

I've just finished taking a home educated girl through English GCSE. I've tutored her for 3 years.

However, we found each other through word of mouth and a mutual friend. I've found it hard to find other daytime tutoring work. There's loads after school!

Have to say though, evening tutoring is a pain in the but my DC have got very good at leaving me alone for an hour. They see it as an hour when I'm not telling them to do stuff! My students tend to come to me so it's loads easier.

A lot of home ed parents get online tutors once their DC start GCSE courses, aged 13-14.

Relying just on home educators is not a viable not I suspect. Much will also depend on your area, for example my county has 2 home ed run tutorial centres offering small group classes and rates far below what a tutor will charge. They tend to be taught by volunteers, there are a lot of qualified teachers who end up home eding their own children and some tutor too. So in home ed circles home eders (and ex home eders whose kids have grown up) tend to get recommended when people ask about tutors.

We hire an online maths tutor for our daughter. Have had him for about 18 months now and we think it's money well spent as he covers stuff that I feel unable to teach.

I am both a home ed parent and a professional tutor so can answer from both sides. My experience is that generally home ed daytime tutoring is centred around GCSE levels and pay rates are much lower than what I get for my tutoring work.

Most of my tutoring work is after school and not home ed kids. However, the agencies I work through (central London) do sometimes have daytime jobs - 70% of these are home ed teens, but I have also seen jobs that are for younger kids.
