Entry for exams in scotland

Sorry not strictly home ed but I figure this board is most likely to know how you can do these things...
Does anyone know how you can just enter a child for an exam in the scottish system?
Long story* but DD1 missed a higher exam and the school are insisting she retakes the subject for the whole year even though she was on track to get A/B. She can't really afford to drop another subject to do it - if the school won't let her just sit the exam, I would like to just enter her independently - maybe though night school or something ( I would pay if nec) ....she only needs to pass and it is such a waste as she did the whole year.
(She has ADHD and her medication was playing havoc with her sleep pattern - it is being reviewed by her doctors - anyway she overslept for the exam and was too anxious to go in late...)

I have an idea that it is almost impossible and that home educated kids in Scotland therefore usually take IGCSEs - but I'm not in Scotland so I hope someone will be along soon with firsthand information.

Why would the school not just let her resit the exam next year without redoing the whole entire year, since she missed it because of a medical condition? What happens to other kids who are too ill to sit their exams?

They won't because she wasn't ill - she overslept. She was anxious because she was late... Although she was waiting to be assessed for anxiety - has been now and is being treated for it too.
To be fair at the end of the day she put herself in that position -the medication does mean she struggles to get to sleep at night but then she doesn't help herself. She doesn't even try to get to sleep -will just say she doesn't feel tired.

At the time I did think it was a good life lesson for her - but not if it means she has either wasted her time for a year or can't do a subject she needs for university.

I know they are strict about saying someone has been ill because if they miss an exam through illness they usually use their mock exams and coursework to award a grade -they don't generally do resits...
I did try and get them to take her medication etc into account but they wouldn't. (I have a feeling her guidance teacher doesn't think ADHD exists or at the very least has limited knowledge of the condition)

I do plan on going in next week to help sort out what she is going to do next year now she has her exam results and I will bring it up again. But I would like a back up plan...
