WW2 study

Hello I was wondering if you could please help me, We don't do HS - even though I would love to but during the holidays we pick subjects we would like to learn more about and I teach them as much as I can.

For the summer holidays the boys have decided they would like to learn more on WW2. This is fine as I have found quite a few resources and we have a museum a few miles away. What I am really struggling with is something 'hands on' we will be doing ration book cooking and some art work but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for experiments?

Make do and mend was a big thing so you could try a sewing project?

Also dig for victory so maybe plant some vegetables?

Build a model of an air raid shelter?

I know these aren't experiments as such but I am not sure what you mean as in chemicals/bombs

We did WW2 a couple of years ago and the kids loved it. We stuck to rations (fortunately we have an allotment!) for 4 weeks; and had an air raid where we went into the understairs cupboard for 15 mins and played cards when they had just gone to bed - I had a sound file of the siren; DD crocheted a dishcloth; we started a blackout blind made of fabric and a bamboo stick; we watched C4s 'The 1940s House'; we did some maths in pounds/shilling/pence; we wrote a diary; wrote letters to daddy (away fighting); DS1 helped a friend clean out her chickens and got some eggs in return.

We did consider digging a hole big enough for an air raid shelter on an unused bit of our allotment but DH rebelled at that. Oh and the kids had no technology for the whole 4 weeks!! (apart from watching The 1940s House and a film).

If you PM me your email, I can send you a copy of the rations sheets just so you can see the sort of quantities you might have had (they changed throughout the war).

You could do some lovely read alouds of books written/set at that time - Goodnight Mr Tom; Back Home; Biggles/Worrals; some chalet school stories; The Silver Sword; Carrie's War; Hitler's Canary.

Be an evacuee for a day ,complete with train ride.Talk to people who live d through it.
