Dd (8) writing a newspaper report (her idea) sat in lounge TV on in background, I'm bfing baby when dp walks in after work then gym. Dd also has a maths book and a pencil case out on coffee table. Dd writes a word wonkily and I told her not to be silly and concentrate. Dp says for her to go in dining room (where table is) so she can concentrate. Dd says she'd like to be in here with us. Dp says he doesn't want lounge to become an extension of her room, she has a bedroom, the dining room full of her stuff, she should study (!) in there. I used to do homework in lounge.. I prefer activity round Me.

Do you think this was actually about whether your dd could concentrate?

The mention of the dining room being full of her stuff hints to me that maybe he wanted more space or peace for himself at that moment. Maybe he wanted to change over to his own favourite TV programme, or talk to you without her there?

Your partner is still being unreasonable, because if that is the problem then he should be upfront about it! My kids will more or less happily scamper off upstairs when they are asked nicely and told the real reason. We used to have one night a week when they were sent upstairs early so dh and I could spend time alone together. (We usually had pizza and ice cream that night, to save me getting in a bad mood from cooking and washing up, so "date night" was moderately popular with the kids even though they were banished from downstairs after an early dinner!)
