math textbooks and reception

I am interested to find a maths text book so that I can do some work at home with my reception aged daugher. Her primary is rated as inadequate and I feel she is learning very little.

I like the look of Singapore Maths but I can't find any kindergarten textbooks on the internet at a sensible price. I like the idea of getting a child to draw pictures to solve a mathematical problem.

I bought a kumon workbook, but I havent' used it as I have never seen anything so dull in my life!

Or has anyone used an abacus to teach maths to children?

We used Letts Revision guide and workbook. Also their magical maths series and the mythical maths series. The Letts KS1 revision guide gives a good overview of all the should be learning in KS1, whereas mythical maths is definitely not dull.

CPG also do a similar series and it's just a case of what you prefer. Waterstones and WH Smiths usually have a shelf you can browse through to see which you like.

I've recently started dd on Khan academy. She is now 10 however, and I think it starts at American 4th grade.

Good luck. I did the same when dd was in reception. One problem, however, was that she got so far ahead that I ended up home educating. However, I'm still glad I did.

I also used to (and still do) have a notebook so I can draw examples as we go though the books.
