Hi,

I am hoping that someone here can help.

DS wants to learn about genes and dna. I am happy to go through this with him, but wondered where i should start? Should i start with cells, what they are, structure etc? or can i go straight for this is dna, it is in the nucleus of a cell (would that be confusing?) then go through the wider cell afterwards?

Additionally, does anyone have any free online resources that would be a good place to start?

Thanks!

It depends a lot on his age- how old is he?

Personally I would start at your local library and see what is available.

We've been doing extraction of DNA from strawberries - google it for how to do it. You don't need to heat the fruit as some resources suggest and it worked well without cooling the alcohol. There are resources explaining how to do the experiment that also explain the structure of the cell and why the experiment works.
