Text books

Can anyone recommend good text books which don't cost two arms and legs for a year 9 following the national curriculum? We have just started home ed - he was in school until July - and I stupidly though I could use the same text books the schools use - until I found out the cost of buying the text books, workbooks and all the other kit they say you need! At the moment we are existing on CGP study guides but these seem very limited.

In year 9 you could start looking at what GCSEs he wants to do and look at what would be needed for each of those, rather than sticking to what they do in school.

And the home education exams Yahoo list (linked from www.home-education-exams.org.uk) can recommend good books for GCSE.
