Hi
I would love to hear any positive stories about how your child learnt to read without being taught. I have been dipping into some free online reading schemes, but i hear so much about people just reading to their child and they suddenly begin to read themselves? how?

Hi kipper. I have discovered that you don't even have to spend the £5-Mona McKnee has phonics for free on video and here is the lesson on gh words. It is lesson 14, (it looks to start with as if there is no sound but it does come on when she speaks). It is terribly old fashioned, you wouldn't want to use it with the DC watching- but watch it as an adult and use it in the way that suits you.
It is just a good system for anyone who hasn't studied phonics and hasn't a clue what phoneme etc is.
Although you can just leave your DC to figure out how to read by themselves it seems very unfair to just leave them, if you know how to read and they want to do it.

kipperandtiger was - the letter "a" following a "w" represents the sound not the sound ... it is logical as you say (what, want, wand etc follow the same pattern) just not following the usual letter to sound relationship

I am utterly amazed that she gives it all for free. Most people would produce a glossy manual costing over £20 and then all the spin off materials, books, games etc and make a business of it. Nice to know there are just helpful people around willing to share.
