home education in hertfordshire

Ok looks like we might be moving to hertfordshire for 6 months (at least). We'd be based near Kings Langley/Berkhampstead.

We have 3 kids, 7, 5 and 2.

Can someone please give me the low down on the local HE scene?

Hi there,

A good place to start is the Yahoo group 'Herts Home Educators'. There's not much going on, and what there is either has a waiting list, or isn't on public transport. (Obviously the latter won't affect you if you have a car.) My neighbour (in Tring) has kids aged 11 and 13 or so, and mostly drives to Oxfordshire or South Bucks, as there is so little locally. I have been thinking of setting up a group in Tring/ Northchurch as I'm on benefits and car-less and so can't travel much, but I've been slightly hesitant to take the plunge as I know others have previously tried to set up groups here and failed, due to lack of interest. One positive aspect to HEing here is that the LEA inspector is nice and friendly and we've never had any trouble from offficialdom. I hope I haven't put you off- many (wealthy, two-car) families have an excellent social/extra-curricular life here. It's just not as accessible or democratic as it would be in a larger town or city.

Hi there

I know your message was some time ago so wonder if you are still HE?

I just wanted to say that I am a teacher (exp of teaching secondary and primary) who has just started HE my 6 year old son. We live in Hemel Hempstead and we are seeking out other friendly HE families with children of similar age in or around the local area. I have a car on most days so would be happy to travel to people (if our children enjoyed each others company) to do cheap or free activities.

I am considering setting up my own HE group in Hemel Hempstead for Home Educators in or around the area but wonder whether there would be enough interest?

If you or anyone you know might be interested, please let me know.
