I am in search of a new bed. My current one is a wooden one that has turned squeaky. I was in a nice hotel at the weekend and realised that a better bed would improve my quality of lige a thousand times.

However, looking for one has me questioning every decision I have previously made re beds and have myself in a muddle!

I've always had wooden slatted beds on legs with space under the bed. Should I be considering divans? What about headboards?

What I want is:
King size
Not squeaky
I like to sit up and read in bed
My 4 year old is a frequent visitor so can cope with that.

Any recommendations very welcome!

Could you replace the slats of your wooden bed for sprung slats and get a new mattress? I have an oak frame and having a really good quality mattress made the difference for me. It's a "rest assured" mattress pocket sprung with a memory foam layer on top. Weighs an absolute tonne compared to the mattress I had before which I could carry myself.

Its 10 years old though so doubt it will still exists. Xx

I’ve moved over to divans with four drawers for storage. Makes life a lot easier.

I got mine from Revival Beds around 10 years ago. They’re hand-made, solid wood. They make them offsite and then they assemble them in your room. They’ve got quite a lot of styles and you can have them open or with under bed storage (2 large drawers either side). Best money I’ve ever spent, I bloody love my bed! Not a squeak to be heard and not a wobble to be felt. I’d have loved some decent solid wood furniture, but couldn’t afford anything else, so just painted my stuff that’s 25+ years old to give them a new lease of life.

I've been on the hunt for a super king, but my questions were the same as yours. Is a divan better than wooden slats? People recommended this site https://www.getlaidbeds.co.uk/wooden-beds. Their slats are thicker/wider apparently. Someone recommended this site for mattresses https://organicmatts.com/

Do you have a style you like? For some reason, I don't like the rectangular head boards on the get laid beds. I'd prefer this shape https://www.thefurnituremarket.co.uk/french-chateau-dark-oak-4ft-6in-double-bed-with-low-footboard, but there is no integrated storage and I worry that dust will collect around any type of storage box I could slide under there. I still haven't ordered anything though.

We just moved and upgraded our bed hugely, we got a frame from funky chunky furniture and we paired it with a John Ryan by design mattress with a horse hair and wool layer and it's like sleeping on a cloud after being on my old mattress that gave me aches and pains. Then we got a down alternative duvet + pillows from JL. It's hard to get out of bed sometimes it's so comfy

I'd probably go for a decent divan with drawers, especially if you're after something sturdy and squeak-free. Wooden frames can be lovely, but the joints and slats can start making noises over time, particularly with a little one regularly climbing in!
One thing I'd definitely prioritise is the mattress. A really good mattress on a fairly basic base can be much more comfortable than an expensive bed frame with a mediocre mattress.
If you like reading in bed, I'd also consider a padded headboard. Much nicer to lean against than solid wood!
One practical thing worth checking is whether a king-size base will actually fit up your stairs. A split divan can make life considerably easier.
Have you got a rough budget in mind?

We went for an ottoman bed and love it. Storage, air circulation and a higher clearance so can fit slippers/hoover under.

Slats allow air to circulate the mattress whereas divans don’t. Also, divans are harder to hoover under, plus difficult to retrieve things that end up underneath (AirPods…..)

Plus padded NON ANGLED headboard. We nearly fell for the slightly angled headboard thinking it would be good to lean on but thankfully tried it out in the shop, would definitely make our necks/backs ache. Vertical much better.
