Is my oak dining table dated?

We bought a lovely dining table from oak furniture land 8 years ago.

It’s a classic design. However it has a honey colour finish. It’s a bit like this https://www.oakfurnitureland.co.uk/furniture/canterbury-natural-solid-oak-extending-table-and-6-cross-back-chairs-with-dappled-beige-seats/1015845.html

The scroll back chairs are doomed and going to the tip. The table is coming with us to a brand new kitchen with neutral greige shaker cabinets and a karndean herringbone LVT floor.

I feel like the colour of the finish is dated and won’t match the floor of our new house.

do we sand it down and re finish it?

or replace for a more modern design table?

Thoughts welcome!

If you have a relatively young kids or even messy older ones - what about a proper oilcloth table cloth ? John Lewis / Etsy etc have them and you just need to measure your table . You can get loads of different patterns and could tie into the colour scheme of your new kitchen . Useful also to buy metal picnic table clips to keep it on .

There is an interior designer /space planner I follow on Facebook called Julie Jones who has some good posts on how to incorporate honey oak into an updated home. It can be as simple as being intentional with the colour palette. So don't give up on it yet!

It’s just a plain table. Sand it and stain or paint it if you don’t like the colour.
I understand about the chairs, scroll back chairs probably do look dated even if you cover them.
My friend’s kids absolutely wrecked hers and she looked into getting them re-covered. The quote was more than the chairs cost the first place and they’d have still been the scroll back style she didn’t particularly like.
I’d put them on Marketplace not free but for a nominal amount (I find that cuts out a lot of time wasters) someone will take them.

So I can truly assure you they have been destroyed.
Noone is going to buy them. I checked fb marketplace for dining chairs and no one is going to select mine from the myriad of much less stained ones 😂 No family in need is going to want them.

potentially if someone wants to upcycle them as they’d need reupholstering. I’d assume the tip would take them to one side if they felt they would be of use.

I am not adding photos but I can be sure they are of no monetary value.

Am puzzled about the staining, is this only on the seat pads? If so then you can easily recover the pads. I would sand the chairs and table legs base etc and paint these a similar colour to your units, leave the table top wood.

I’m pretty certain the OP doesn’t have the chairs in the photo and has scroll back chairs where the whole of the seat and seat back is fabric with just a small amount of wood on the legs.

Edited to put in quote.

How on earth did general family life, children and animals destroy the chairs so badly?

ell me you've never had a puppy without telling me...
Also ours were wrecked by spag bol stains and then wine as they grew up. Not to mention one memorable party we interupted where all the girls were dancing on the table in stilletos. I'm so glad they've grown up...

I quite like the table OP - and the colour.

I think it's classic not dated. I'm looking for a new dining table and want something that will last 30 years so I'll avoid anything super trendy.

I never think of furniture as being dated , what matters is if I like it and is it useful. If you don't like it in your new house then just get rid of it

SpottyAlpaca · Yesterday 12:48

Who cares if it”s ‘dated’? The whole point of oak furniture is that it ages & acquires patina over time as it is used for the intended purpose. Therefore old is better than new, and as along as it’s structurally sound, the older the better.

Nailed it.

Agree. I really like the table and think it’s just about having the right decor to work with it. I’m a fan of bringing different styles together to create something unique but cohesive. I’ve never been a fan of having everything go together perfectly, I think it’s a bit boring.
