IKEA use a lot of beech and birch, I think. I don't think that's oak though as that's usually more expensive so not a typical IKEA choice plus I can see parts of knots in the wood which you don't usually see with oak.

Mind you, Google Lens suggests oak so what do I know? 🤷

"How do i keep it from going yellow/orange?"

Real wood (including veneer) will change colour depending on age, exposure to sunlight etc.
Can you stop it... no idea?
Best solution is to ensure that it any colour change happens evenly across the whole surface.

Birch. Oak has medullary rays, beech tiny speckles in the direction of the grain.

I think its wood veneer around a screw hole in can see depth of the veneer, maybe a mm or 2

I dont think it's ikea the holes for the shelves are wrong and they feel way too solid

Birch is interesting

Im gping to wax it, i think not sure about a stain/varnish

It isnt ikea is it?

I don't remember IKEA selling cabinets like that. The cam lock screws like the one in the picture were popularised by IKEA, but all flatpack furniture seems to use it now. Are there no marks on the base that would tell you the manufacturer?

CurlyKoalie · 18/10/2026 21:48

If it's real pine it will go orangey over time as it reacts with the air and sunlight. Wax might slow it down a bit. I can't think of a permenant fix that still allows you to see the wood though.

sherbetlemonade · 18/10/2026 21:56

It's usually the varnish on pine furniture that goes a funny colour, I think.

Stripped pine still goes orange over time and that isn't varnished.

The other possibility is it could be ash - that’s what we have. It was very pale to start with but the varnish has yellowed over time. It’s much better wood than pine - ours is solid not veneer though.

Ash veneer shouldn't go orange.
