IKEA Pax wardrobe planning appt at home

Has anyone had a person from Ikea come to their house, and how was it? I’m looking to buy a Pax wardrobe; there isn’t much space, only 125cm width so it would only be a small wardrobe. Would they come for such a small thing? (Their website suggests they do, for £25, and if you buy something worth over £300 you get the £25 refunded which I would do). Reason I’d like them to come here is so they can see the space and advise what fits; help me decide re doors etc as it’s a fairly small space. I’m aware that would mean I’d miss out on seeing the wardrobe in person but I’m pretty sure I know what they look like. I’d also like them to see the space as a worried how anyone would assemble the wardrobe in my not too big bedroom and again wonder if they can advise.

I also wondered if anyone has used their assembly service - I think they use a third party company. Finally, I currently have an Ikea wardrobe that I don’t like and wondered if they take it, as I think ikea have a recycling scheme or something like that?

You can plan it all yourself online using their planning tool. Go and look at all the options in person so that you can get ideas. It’s not just about the space but how you would use it. Do you wear long dresses or jumpsuits? If so, you need full length hanging space. If not, you could get two rails. Do you have a chest of drawers already, or will you need drawers in the wardrobe? How high are your ceilings? If they are high, then get the taller version. You can save space by getting slim cascading hangers online.

Thanks @MadKittenWoman
I’ve looked at the online tool and played about with it but I’m specifically looking for someone from ikea to help me, without having to go in. I already have a rough idea what I’m looking for, just would like someone who knows about it to give me a hand.. at my own place.

For 125cm it really doesn’t seem worth it. Just take your time and work up various ideas on the planning app as per pp. You aren’t going to have many options - in fact the only option to fill the space is 1 x 75cm unit and 1 x 50 unit.

Ok fair point @Sherararara
I’ll try again with the app

I'd be careful choosing your door handles if you only have enough space for the wardrobe. You will definitely need ones with a slim/low profile - not ones that stick out or they will hit your wall.

I didn't use the IKEA TaskRabbit - I booked it myself separately through TaskRabbit as it was cheaper.

I've heard with regards to the recycling scheme that you need to take the unit intact back to the store, or rebuild it at the store, so they can check all the parts are there. I'd try selling it on Gumtree/Marketplace.

Make sure when you buy your new wardrobe you use your IKEA card. It offers build insurance if anything does go wrong with the construction.

What are the dimensions of your current wardrobe and what do you like/dislike about it?

It is true the recycling service only accept fully constructed items. We only realised when we got there and had to reconstruct the items in the Ikea. They did at least have all the tools!

Does the 125cm include the skirting boards? People often measure the walls but forget about the skirting.

Get them out to advise if you really need the help.

Otherwise the online planner is pretty good.

I’ve installed a LOT of Pax wardrobes - I did an entire room as a dressing room in one house and used Pax to fit out a large WIR in another. It’s a great product range.

Let me know if I can give any help or advice.

One bit of homework to do - work out exactly what you need to store in there, how many pieces and how much room they’ll take up - eg 1 linear metre of long hang, and how long your longest pieces are, and the longest length of your short hang.

Good point, I’d advise to take them off if you can.

We did Besta for the front room and went in store for help. The gentleman helping was really helpful. Pointed out things we hadnt realised when we showed him our online plan. They also do have small stores that just do planning.

If you have an ikea family card it can get you money off delivery.

With the smaller, there aren't that much door options as you can't have sliding doors on less than 150cm. you will need a combination of 50, 25, 50 hinged doors on 50 and 75cm, we originally wanted this but they weren't in stock in what we planned so we just got a 100cm wardrobe and a gap at the side which I'm happy about now as I do use the space.

As PPs say consider your skirting boards in measurements also with the back of it you may need to put a wooden baton on the wall to make it level and fix it to if the skirting board cutouts don't fit,

We made up a ceiling height 150cm one in a small box room as you can make them upright. If there are two of you they are reasonably easy to make but you will almost certainly have to make it upright if its a tall one and the room is small. If there is only you, I would get someone in.

Thanks everyone, that’s all really useful info.
