Rug suggestion - these clash horribly!

As username suggests I know it's a nightmare at the moment. The top rug nearer the sofa is expensive and good quality. The other one is cheap, too small and clashes with the top one. Can anyone suggest a replacement? I'm going round in circles deciding whether to get another Persian style one, that would probably clash again, or something different in style, but would that look odd. AI suggested a navy Persian style - do people think that would work?

I don’t think they clash. For all anyone knows they could have been inherited from your grandparents and originally bought during their travels in Algeria before the war…😆

Do you need two? I’d either get rid of the cheaper one or replace both with one long rug, but mismatching the two together would do my head in.

Navy would work, but on the whole I prefer the cheaper faded one anyway.

Whilst it's a pretty colour, the cheaper faded one looks just that...cheap! So, coupled with the fact one rug would look better than two, imo, I'd be looking to replace both with a much larger 'area' rug. If the other rug has sentimental value, I'd be trying to find somewhere else it would fit.

I'm probably biased though, as we have huge - mostly antique/vintage - rugs in our downsize cottage!

Maybe navy is the way to go then - thanks all. Do people think it has to be Persian style? Just seen a nice one in Ikea but it was plain rather than Persian.

It's a longer than wide room, though I wouldn't call it narrow. But because of the fireplace jutting out at one end I think any large rug would either have to be so big I may as well get it carpeted, which I don't want as I like the wood, and even then, due to the fireplace it would have to be to one side at the top end of the room which would then leave a gap at the other end.

Or it would have to be a runner, which to me is odd in a room other than a hallway. I like having the two rugs but they need to complement each other.

Plain navy will likely need constant vacuuming. I regretted the navy carpet I had fitted in an old house, every bit of fluff showed up. Get a rug with a pattern if you can.

I think runners look good in rooms where they fit the space, not just hallways. The Persian one is much nicer and it’s quite usual to mix and match different Persian (style) rugs. I really dislike the trend for the faded look
