What should we add to make our guest room welcoming?

We are completely doing a room on a top floor for guests and we got two small wicker baskets (flat) to put some bits in to make people feel welcome. It will probably be used once a month and the rest of the time and study room for a teenager who already has their own room so it’s just a quiet peaceful space. We have a lovely pine desk for him. A large king size bed with pale green bed linen and a nice velux green blind. There is a triple white solid wood wardrobe, a large white chest of drawers and bookshelf and a white wooden bed. We have sanded and oiled the large desk and it look greats pine and cream, the walls are cream. The white wooden furniture is a little knocked and battered so we are sanding it all back and painting it with this pale green or possibly a cream to match the desk or might paint it in this colour French Grey https://www.farrow-ball.com/paint/french-gray

We have a dark velvet green ottoman in there for spare sheets and duvet sets.

we were thinking of putting some bits in and on the two bedside tables and got some wicker baskets so far we have:

nice bed side lights tap on and off
Charging station
spare toothbrush and toothpaste
tissues
first aid kit with paracetamol and ibuprofen (only adults staying) in top drawer
spare sewing kit in top drawer
a couple of nice books to read
alarm clock or Alexa echo spot?

what else would you like/ this isn’t an air b n b this is just our home? but we have family and friends come and stay at least once a month

That's plenty, you aren't a guest house. There is always some weirdo comes onto these threads to say that if there's no mini fridge/breakfast menu/range of pillows to choose from, you are a crap host, but ultimately, bed, somewhere to charge phone, warm and comfortable is perfect and thoughtful.

This is lovely, and we did something similar when we had a spare room (before we had kids). I'd add one of those water carafes with a matching glass on top but then I think that's everything covered.

That all sounds super lovely and thoughtful.

Only thing I'd say is that I'd assume towels hanging up were already in use by people who lived there. Whereas folded and left on the bed indicates they are for the guest.

I'd also never think to look inside drawers in someone else's house!

We would say top drawer have first aid kit and sewing kit and shout if you need anything. The towel thing is them all rolled up and then there are hooks for them to hang them up.

Just thought a nice sharp pair of little scissors and tweezers is a good shout too!

I get two magazine like Breathe and Simple things so we will put them in there and then recycle them the following month. A waste bin is already in the bathroom. My sister asked for sanitary towel bags - so we will get some of these too and some spare pads as she started hers unexpected when she visited and I went through the menopause early 13 years old so I never considered that.

I would never drink water from a carafe in a hotel or guest room - you never know how long it's been sitting there.

I always put small box of tissues either side of bed, carafe of fresh water with glasses, small dish for rings, cufflinks etc, fresh towels and face cloths, spare blanket, bathrobes and disposable hotel slippers and sometimes a book I know the family member would like.

I would dishwasher it and it to them as they went upstairs I think 🤔 everything goes in the dishwasher here. And I found a sturdy green glass one online

Clearly you'd hand it to them to take upstairs as they unpack/go to bed. Blimey...

I don't even know anybody who wears cufflinks.

Water by the bed is essential to me. Maybe a small number of paperbacks.😃

Just got a hairdryer great idea especially as I don’t have one!

I always put little packets of pretzels and popcorn, homemade of course with a little ribbon

Call me vain but my pet hate when I stay somewhere is the lack of a full length mirror, or at least a mirror larger than the one over the bathroom sink. So make sure there's a decent big mirror in the room ideally close to plug socket so they can use the hairdryer in front of it!

I doubt that UO carafe is dishwasher safe, the transfer will come off

A couple of bottles of water. 1 still and 1 Sparling and a glass.

Tbh I don’t think you need loads of stuff in there as presumably they are close to you & will spend time with you as opposed to staying in their room.

Good bedding & a comfortable bed is the most important, then good sized nice feeling towels.

Tissues, mirror, toiletries & sanitary bags are handy

Wouldn't bother with anything else.

My pet peeve when staying with anyone else is the la k of a full
length mirror, a mirror that’s in a good spot to do your make up, and if the bathroom bin doesn’t have a lid. Oh, also if there is no space in the bathroom to put toiletries.

i mean it’s not a major peeve, it doesn’t stop me visiting or anything!

a friend who’s a lovely host always has spare dressing gowns on the bedroom door. That’s a nice touch.

Oh, full size bath sheets. Not those smaller bath towels that are design for very petite people or to go round a man’s waist!
