Can we talk DOORMATS!?

Riveting I know - so I don’t have a porch however I am having engineered wood floor fitted this week in my hallway and living room so I think that deserves a new doormat or two.

What are people doing? Do they have an outdoor mat for the world to see and then an indoor mat for people to actually use or also use both because I always use both at other peoples houses.

My front door is painted pale blue and once you open it, the hall stairs and landing are very neutral so anything goes.

Please help me be excited about this and tell me what you would do. Examples would be amazing!

I have a rubberised mat outside in a kind of wrought iron design and then a coir mat just inside with further jute matting for the high traffic bits. Natural fibres, so I think it looks quite nice

Outside is predominantly to use, inside is predominantly for ambience.

I’ve just had my second one from turtle mat, first one lasted years and went in the machine on.

I have this from Amazon inside the front door. It kind of goes with our botanical wallpaper in the hall. Him-cat uses it as a presentation area for dead mice 😬 Has lasted well (given how often it gets cleaned!).

We have a large plain coir mat in the porch step for actual feet wiping.

We have a dark wood lacquered floor and have this mat from Dunelm (non-slip and washable - does what it says on the can).

Have the floor fitted with a matwell and drop one in flush with the floor

Turtlemat ones for exterior and interior are all great! They seem expensive but last for years

Hug a rug are fab and last years even with regular washes

I have a long fitted coir mat in my hallway. I have no idea how to clean it though, apart from hoovering which of course does nothing for the stains. I tried putting a thinner mat on top, but it kept shifting up to the door and blocking it.

No porch here either and both doors open onto inherited shiny tiled (slippy when wet) floors. We bought a big thinish ribbed door mat and cut it to size so it fits snug so doesn’t move. And we kept it quite big so a few people can easily walk in, take shoes off and leave there (good for guests).

We had an engineered wood flooring and they created a 'mat well' and fitted a coir mat in it.

We inherited a 'mat well' when we bought our current house in 2024. It was part of the last renovations carried out in 1965. Bloody awful thing, as it was hacked into the original Georgian floorboards and surrounded by hideous carpet. Soon got rid of it by filling it in and levelling the floor!

We now have lovely waxed floorboards (and a simple jute door mat from Arket 😍), but we appreciate original features whereas the previous owners obviously didn't.

I bought a new one from Ikea a couple of weeks ago and they had umpteen different doormats to choose from.
