Two matching sofas or different colours for the living room?

I want two new sofas. Shall I get two the same or have them in different colours? I fancy a blue one and an orange one, but I’m not sure. What do you think?

I loathe boring decor, but I'd still get two the same. I think having different would make it difficult to decorate around them. You can add colour, texture etc with cushions, pictures.

I’d get the same colour. If you like blue and orange together, it’s going to look much more satisfying if you have a blue sofa with orange throws/ cushions, or vice versa.

I keep buying different ones then kick myself as it’s much more difficult to decorate

Could you pick one colour but then each sofa is a different shade of that colour?

It can be more difficult to decorate around different colour sofas, but that hasn't stopped me!

At our last house we had a French style cream linen sofa with exposed wood frame paired with a striped velvet love seat in a more contemporary style. We have a gorgeous antique Persian rug in an unusual colourway (olive/turquoise/cerise etc) which kind of picked up the loveseat colours. The cushions on both were also a riot of similar tones and we colour drenched the walls etc in F&B Olive estate emulsion/eggshell.

Since downsizing in 2024 we sold the cream sofa and loveseat. We now have a turquoise velvet sofa and an antique dusky pink two seater in the TV room. If we ever get round to it, the walls will be a turquoise wallpaper.

In the smaller 'snug' there's a pale blue armchair and a sofa which is currently grey, but will be reupholstered in something more colourful, probably patterned. Walls in there are a saturated pink. Vintage 1980s Osborne & Little curtains and striped Oka kilim. It's all a bit mad, tbh.

Orange and blue sofas sound great @Echointhedarkness but you do need to be brave...and certain you'll be happy to live with them for a while. We tend to keep our furniture etc for ages and don't follow fashion in interiors.

Decorate and furnish your house to your taste. It's your home. Go for it if you love the two colours together!

I’d have different colours. Mismatched cushions, etc. I hate matchy matchy though.

I’ve just ordered two that are matching, I can then dress them with different throws and cushions. I never manage the mismatched look - the room ends up looking like I’ve rescued random things and thrown them together. I really admire people who can pull it all into a cohesive look, I’m definitely not one of them.

Have you got space for a different coloured chair? I have two small sofas the same colour, then a chair in a colour of one of the walls

I just googled "living rooms with mismatched sofas" and "with different coloured sofas", smae few pics came up. It's a nice look.

I was choosing a really bold colour for my sofas, and already have lot of colour in the house, so I went for matching, but our occassional chairs in the living room are an entirely different colour.
